Move the Dial

Sometimes I find the ability to tune into a pleasing radio station a great metaphor for life. For the past two weeks I have been fighting with my insurance company over a lost mail order medication. I also need to include the US Postal Service in this fight as they were the original source of the problem. Finally I was at my wits end. I really went ballistic with the customer service representative from the mail order pharmacy. I think I even used the “f” word. Not the proudest moment in my life. After that call, I was so upset and angry and things still felt completely unresolved. I had to leave for work, so no more to be done in that moment. When I got in the car, public radio was on broadcasting more horrible news about gun violence and the lack of response from congress. I stared at the dial and thought, “I don’t have to listen to this. I don’t want to listen to this. I can turn the dial-change the station”, so I did. I found some classical music and immediately felt my body relax and my mind quiet. I realize that we can do the same thing in life. We can make another choice, find another station that is more pleasing-that helps us calm down, regain balance. It doesn’t have to be a radio station, but that really worked for me in that moment. I was able to gain some control over this one thing. What can you do to find another station-make another choice when life feels overwhelming and out of control? Find your new radio station. Move the dial. It’s possible.

p.s. the medication came the next day!
